Why δ?

For a single agent, δ = F − G is the gap between what they feel and what they would actually grieve. Across a population this becomes a collective variable. A crowd can carry low average grievance G yet huge &lVert;δ&rVert;: many small, suppressed mismatches stacked side by side. The grid reveals this hidden texture. When a shock arrives, low-G crowds with high &lVert;δ&rVert; do not absorb it — they convert it. The distortion field tips, neighbors infect neighbors, and the crowd flips into a cascading regime that no one cell could have predicted from its own grievance alone.
