Classical crystals can only have 2, 3, 4, or 6-fold rotational symmetry (crystallographic restriction theorem). Penrose tilings break this rule with 5-fold symmetry - because they are NOT periodic! Rotate by 72° and see the pattern match itself, yet it never repeats translationally.
