Bioluminescence begins when the enzyme luciferase catalyzes the oxidation of luciferin
in the presence of ATP-Mg²⁺ and O₂. The excited oxyluciferin product releases a photon as it
returns to ground state — producing cold light with up to 41% quantum yield.
