The BSD Connection

The Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture predicts that the rank of an elliptic curve equals the order of vanishing of L(E,s) at s=1.

For rank 0 curves, L(E,1) ≠ 0.
For rank 1 curves, L(E,1) = 0 but L'(E,1) ≠ 0.
