Decomposition & Nutrient Cycling

Saprotrophic fungi are nature's recyclers. They secrete enzymes (cellulase, lignin peroxidase) that break down dead wood and leaves into simple compounds. The released nutrients -- carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus -- become available for plants. Watch mycelium colonize organic matter and return nutrients to the soil.
