Mycorrhizal Symbiosis

A close-up view of the root-fungus interface. The plant provides carbon (sugars from photosynthesis) to the fungus. In return, the fungus delivers phosphorus and water from soil the roots cannot reach. In ectomycorrhiza, fungal hyphae wrap around roots forming a mantle. In arbuscular mycorrhiza, hyphae penetrate root cells to form tree-like arbuscules.
