Physics: The Saffman-Taylor instability occurs when a less viscous fluid displaces a more viscous one in a Hele-Shaw cell. Small perturbations grow into fingers due to pressure gradients - longer fingers "screen" shorter ones from the pressure field, causing tip-splitting and fractal patterns.
