Swarming Motility

Swarming is collective bacterial movement across surfaces. Cells differentiate into elongated "swarmer" cells with multiple flagella. They produce surfactants (e.g., rhamnolipids in Pseudomonas) to reduce surface tension. Cells move in coordinated rafts, aligning their movement directions. This enables rapid colony expansion on semi-solid media.
