Bet-Hedging Strategy

Persister cells are genetically identical bacteria that stochastically enter a dormant, non-dividing state. This makes them tolerant (not resistant) to antibiotics that target active cellular processes. After antibiotic treatment, persisters can "wake up" and repopulate, causing chronic and relapsing infections. This is a bet-hedging survival strategy.
