Plasmid Maintenance

Plasmids impose a fitness cost on host cells but may carry beneficial genes (antibiotic resistance). During division, plasmids must replicate and segregate properly. Errors lead to plasmid-free daughter cells ("curing"). Under selection (antibiotics), plasmid-free cells die, maintaining the plasmid population.
