Denitrification

Denitrifying bacteria use nitrate (NO₃⁻) as an electron acceptor when oxygen is limited. The pathway: NO₃⁻ → NO₂⁻ → NO → N₂O → N₂. N₂O is a potent greenhouse gas; complete denitrification to N₂ is preferable. Low oxygen and available carbon promote this process.
