Sulfate Reduction

Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) use SO₄²⁻ as a terminal electron acceptor, producing hydrogen sulfide (H₂S). H₂S is toxic and causes corrosion. In iron-rich environments, H₂S reacts with Fe²⁺ to form FeS (black precipitate), reducing toxicity but causing blackening of sediments.
