Intracellular Pathogens

Some bacteria survive inside host cells. After uptake into a vacuole, they may escape to the cytoplasm (like Listeria) or replicate within the vacuole (like Salmonella). Cytoplasmic bacteria can spread cell-to-cell using actin rockets, avoiding the immune system.
