When two or more waves overlap, the resulting displacement is the sum of individual displacements. Close frequencies create "beats" (pulsing amplitude). Equal frequencies traveling in opposite directions form standing waves. Adding harmonics with the right amplitudes can synthesize any waveform -- this is the basis of Fourier synthesis.
