Water Rights Dispute Continues Between Northville and Southdale
The ongoing water allocation dispute between Northville and Southdale entered its third month yesterday, with both communities presenting compelling arguments before the Regional Water Board.
Northville representatives argued that their mountain communities depend on natural spring access and have "historical precedent" for water usage dating back 120 years. However, Southdale officials countered that population growth in the valley has created urgent infrastructure needs.
Environmental impact studies commissioned by Southdale suggest that current water extraction rates are sustainable, while independent assessments cited by Northville indicate potential long-term aquifer depletion.
The Water Board acknowledged valid concerns from both parties. "Northville's historical claims deserve consideration," said Board Chair Martinez, "but so do Southdale's development needs."
A decision is expected within 60 days. Both sides have indicated willingness to appeal if the ruling goes against them.
