The No-Show Paradox is one of the most shocking results in voting theory. Under Instant
Runoff Voting (IRV), a group of voters who prefer candidate X can cause X to lose simply by
showing up and voting honestly for X. If they had stayed home, X would have won. This means that in IRV,
it can be rational not to vote, even when you have a strong preference. Plurality and approval
voting are immune to this paradox.
